Gasoline

Gasoline products have standardized over the years, following both modern automobile engine requirements or user preferences. Unleaded means it contains no ethanol (a corn-based ethyl alcohol) and is 100% pure gasoline produced without tetraethyllead — which is now phased out in the U.S.

Pure gasoline is also blended with ethanol with percentages ranging from E10 (10% ethanol) to E85 (85% ethanol) produced for flex-fuel cars. The primary purpose of ethanol is to oxygenate the fuel at the pump to reduce fuel emissions.

Octane ratings or octane numbers are a standard measure of the engine’s performance. Fuels with higher octane ratings are generally used by engines requiring higher compression ratios. Most modern engines will operate normally on “regular” grades with 10% ethanol.

Octane ratings are not indicators of energy content in the fuel. They measure only the fuel’s tendency to burn in a controlled manner. Racing fuels, for instance, may have a variety blends which can produce an octane rating of 110 or much higher

Mulgrew Oil & Propane Co. delivers the following gasoline products:

  • Unleaded
  • Premium
  • E85
  • Ethanol Blends
  • Gasohoncy service.

Diesel

The diesel engine has proven to be extremely energy efficient and cost effective. Even though diesel fuel may priced a bit higher than gasoline, it delivers more energy than gasoline in the same volume comparison. The tough, durable diesel engine provides much higher mileage, making it the obvious choice for automobiles, heavy transport vehicles and off-road equipment.

Diesel Advantages

Modern diesel engines are quieter and maintenance costs have been reduced.
There is no sparking upon ignition. Without spark plugs and wires, maintenance costs are lowered.
Engines are rugged and made to last.
A water-cooled diesel unit can operate for 12,000 to 30,000 hours before major maintenance is needed.
Fuel costs figured in kilowatt units produced can be 30-50% less than gas engines.
Diesel engines have a wide variety of uses, such as power generators, mechanical drives, locomotives, construction equipment and countless industrial applications.

Mulgrew Oil & Propane Co. delivers the following Diesel products:

  • Premium On-Road #1 and #2
  • Premium Off-Road #1 and #2
  • Biodiesel Blends
  • Kerosene
  • Home Heating

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a renewable, clean-burning diesel replacement that’s helping to improve the environment. Biodiesel operates in conventional combustion engines and requires no special storage. Mulgrew Oil Co. will custom blend soy biodiesel to your specific requirements with a range of B1 to B100

Biodiesel benefits: An alternative fuel that extends the value of petroleum and the cleanliness and life of diesel engines. A fuel mixture containing 1% biodiesel can increase the lubricity of your fuel by as much as 65%. It’s non-toxic… research has shown it to be 10 times less toxic than table salt.

Biodiesel is the only biofuel to successfully complete emissions testing in accordance with the Clean Air Act. It contains no hazardous emissions, it’s biodegradable, renewable and locally produced, making us less dependent on foreign oil.

DEF

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an exhaust after-treatment system that injects a small amount of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust. Mulgrew Oil Co. DEF meets the stringent Clean Air Act standards for SCR technology that diesel engine service warranties specify. Available sizes: 330 gal. totes; 55 gal. drums; 2.5 gal. jugs and bulk delivery.

Two of the great benefits that SCR technology has provided is a 3-5% savings on fuel and a reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Diesel Exhaust Fluid is an important part of SCR technology, so what is it? DEF is a clear fluid mixture of pure automotive-grade urea (32.5%) and deionized water (67.5%). It’s nonflammable, nontoxic, non-explosive and nonhazardous. Caution should be taken in exposing DEF to metals. Stainless steel and HDPE (high density polyethylene) are the approved substances to come into contact with DEF.

Storage for Mulgrew Oil Co. DEF is recommended in temperatures between 40 and 80 degrees for a shelf life up to one year. The most important quality of DEF is its purity. Keep unused DEF free from any contamination. Vehicle manufacturers place either a dashboard gauge or warning light to avoid running out of DEF. In certain vehicles, the engine may stop or speed will be slowed if your DEF tank runs dry.

What are some basic conservation tips?

Conservation is easy with home heating oil products. First and foremost, a well-tuned, well-maintained system uses less oil. Also, turn down your thermostat. Each 1 degree lower equals approximately a 3% annual savings, and an additional 1% if you lower it again overnight. Consider a smart thermostat. A smart thermostat can save energy by automatically adjusting heating. Reduce the setting whenever everyone is asleep or away from the home.
